Along with Gérard Fromanger, Merri Jolivet was one of the main organisers of the people's workshop created in the Beaux-Arts school in Paris during the events of May 68.
The artist found screen printing to be an effective means of spreading the revolutionary message. His political commitment was again expressed in 1972 with a series of pictures in homage to Pierre Overney, a militant worker murdered by a security guard outside the Renault factory in Billancourt. 0pposed to all repressive violence, here he appropriates an urban view in order to remove the instruments of power from it. He thus joined the Matisse of 1900, an anarchist who had removed the Police Prefecture from a high-angle view of the Saint-Michel bridge.
