Exposed Painting Dioxazine Violet
2005
Scots artist Callum Innes made his name in the 1990s with an abstract, rigorous art based on monochrome painting. He works by the addition and subtraction of paint, applying a first layer to the canvas and then, before it has dried, going over it with a brush dipped in turpentine, “un-painting” it. His paintings get their depth from this operation, endlessly repeated, the painting building up layer by layer as if incorporating time itself. One of the “Exposed Painting” series, Exposed Painting Dioxazine Violet is striking for its majestic monumentality and its air of profound silence.
