Basel Sequence
2011
Recurring as a leitmotiv in all Marc Camille Chaimowicz’s work, the pastel tones of Basel Sequence are the opposite of the vivid colours dear to purist adherents of the modernist doxa. It is hard to say exactly what these works are, floating somewhere between painting, picture rail and wall. The patterns sometimes allude to the wallpaper of the artist’s past apartments, though there is nothing to indicate it might truly be the case. Apparently repetitive to infinity, these patterns are painstakingly painted by hand. In applying his mark, the artist confers the value of uniqueness on the most commonplace of décors.
