Ghada Amer has focused since the early 1990s on the representation and role of women in eastern and western cultures.
Beginning with her first canvases, painting is downplayed to make room for embroidery, a traditionally feminine practice. With her figures of women, often inspired by magazine photographs, the artist explores the themes of love and sexuality. On this apparently abstract painting, she embroidered women in the throes of sexual pleasure. She subverts the stereotype of the woman as object, proposing images in which sexual pleasure is produced, experienced and represented by women themselves.
