Yellow Predominance
(Dominante jaune)
1949
Certain colours in this painting attract or repulse each other, in accordance with the ''Push and Pull" principle developed by the artist.
Hans Hofmann was a German painter who spent some time in Paris before moving to the United States in 1932. As a theorist and founder of several art schools, he played an important role as a go-between European avant-gardes and American art. As it can be seen this painting : the palette evokes the colours of Robert Delaunay, for whom he worked as an assistant, while the pulley, the crane and the chain that we can discern refer ta the artist's history as an engineer. The very free treatment of a space without perspective effects foreshadows abstract expressionism.
