"Black is the rejection of all art before me." (Venet)
This work belongs to the Reliefs cartons series begun between 1963 and 1965. Black industrial paint was applied regularly from side to side with a spray gun, successively covering the surface of salvaged cardboard. Bernar Venet used industrial materials in order to eliminate all traces of expressiveness. With this radical act, he took position against the object art of New Realism and the figurative and lyrical painting of the 1960s.
