"The coherence of typologies within the architectural project is the ultimate goal we must seek." (Rossi)
The Gallaratese district in Milan, built by Carlo Aymonino, formed both the prototype for a new concept of social housing and a genuine piece of the city, with a design based on typological studies of traditional Lombard homes. Five buildings surround an auditorium and shape the squares and streets in imitation of the historical city. Aymonino called on Aldo Rossi to design one of the buildings. Rossi had just published L'Architettura della Città, a reference work in the rediscovery of the historical city and the definition of its typology.
