Jungle
1947
First published in 1947 in the Introduction à une nouvelle poésie et à une nouvelle musique [Introduction to new poetry and music] then noted in ink in its manuscript, the first Lettrist drawings reveal the permeability of the literary and visual mediums. The publication is a founding text of Lettrism, proposing a general history of the arts that is divided into two stages: an "amplic" phase of perfecting the means of representing the real world is followed by a "chiselling" phase, which deconstructs each artistic discipline into its essential materials. As the final stage in this process, the letter constitutes the pedestal for a possible renewal. Applied to literature, this theory produced a radical sound poetry that demanded equally to be seen and to be read.
