The Wings of Augury
(Les Ailes de l'augure)
[1936]
The title of this surprising figure refers to a practice in Ancient Rome, which predicts the future by observing the flight of birds.
Eileen Agar, an Englishwoman of Argentinian origin contributed greatly to the spread of Surrealism in the United Kingdom. Sharing an interest in mythology and animism with its members, she designed composite sculptures that refer us to the magical abjects and prehistoric rituals. However, the form of this work is reminiscent of an ancient Victory, with its elegant terracotta head associated with a variety of organic debris.
