These works, with a marked theatrical and conceptual aspect, placed La Monte Young at the forefront of the New York avant-garde.
La Monte Young is a contemporary music composer associated with the minimalism movement, which he contributed to. In the 1960s, he was also influenced by the experimental music of John Cage and worked with artists from the Fluxus movement as well as the musical genre known as "drone", creating static compositions of sustained sounds. Compositions 1960 and Compositions 1961 include some of his most famous works such as Draw a straight fine and follow it.
