Doric Sky is one of the “Doric” series of large-format paintings produced between 2008 and 2014, conceived as an homage to Ancient Greece. In these evocations of the simplest and most unadorned of the Greek orders, the artist mobilises the architectural possibilities of painting. The three panels are thus made up of horizontal and vertical blocks that have the solidity of masonry, the palette of blacks and beiges seemingly aspiring to the chromatics of stone. Typical of Sean Scully’s allegorical and contemplative abstraction, this series is amongst the most impressive of his recent achievements
