A major artist of the Pictures Generation, Charlesworth made the appropriation of images her main modus operandi.
Maps belongs to the Objects of Desire series (1983-1988) for which the artist cut out printed photographs which she then rephotographed on a plain background, printed on glossy paper and placed in colourmatched frames. Here she uses a reproduction of a prehistoric map engraved on a stone disc and yellow paper strips reminiscent of road markings. By taking these symbols from their context and associating them, the artist gives them a new meaning, which questions our representation in a world saturated with images.
