Mendes da Rocha's works build on a commonly used architectural model in Brazil: a concrete box that delineates the building and houses plant life, light and different spaces arranged around a clear public pathway.
An iconic figure of brutalism, architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha earned recognition from the start of his career with his ambitious project for the Paulistano athletics club in Sao Paulo. He was connected with architect Villanova Artigas, with whom he shared lessons before the dictatorship forced them away tram teaching. ln recognition of his internationally celebrated work, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2006, the "Nobel Prize" of architecture.
