Three possible Edges (part 1)
2008
Skaer's interventions on an existing image which she copies, reappropriates, dismantles and rebuilds, undermine all sense of familiarity and produce a new interpretation of the things we thought we knew.Lucy Skaer has developed a body of work occupied by the theme of death, like here, where she depicts a life-size whale skeleton. An archetypal animal, this cetacean disappears, blending into the vibrant surface, composed of compartments filled with spirals of ink. With its meticulous execution, reminiscent of cross-stitch embroidery, this large-scale image is both fascinating and vaguely threatening.
