Giotto. Atelier de Gasiorowski
1984
Gasiorowski's relationship with painting was both painful and passionate, eminently ambivalent.
Gérard Gasiorowski studied at the School of Decorative Arts and then decided to drop everything, before taking up painting again just as the critics were announcing his disappearance. Starting from scratch, he felt disgust for his art and set about reconquering it in series, such as Croûtes and Impuissances. ln this painting, which is part of the Cérémonies series, a figure dressed in a gown with their back to the viewer seems to be leaning against a wall as though nauseous. Perhaps he is looking at his feet, or at the "indefinite line" that is recurrent in his work and runs here along the floor of his studio? This figure is exactly the same as that of Judas in a 1304-1306 painting by Giotto.
