Beyrouth 82 - Plane I
1982 - 2004
Walid Raad explores the history of Lebanon and more specifically the war that ravaged his native country between 1975 and 1991. Inventor of the fictive Atlas Group, represented as documenting that civil war, he investigates the construction of historical narrative and the place of fiction in art. This series raises doubt about the status of photographs. Raad tells us it was shot during the Israeli invasion of Beirut in 1982, and while his account suggests that the pinkish tinge is due to the poor storage conditions of the negatives, such pictorial effects might also be achieved by chemical means.
