Balcon additionnel
2008
Julien Berthier's work uses abrasive irony to question the role of the artist in society.
He often appears in it, in the role of the clandestine road worker, beaten in advance, the reckless town planner or the back-up architect. His Balcon additionnel [Additional Balcony] is an overly-ornate accessory in the style of the Second Empire. Carefully produced, his creation is, however, only a stage in this project which claims to add an element of zany comfort to examples of social habitat that are fairly sorely lacking in them or, conversely, to add them to a Haussmann-style façade, but based on an organisation that deviates from the architectural canon, allowing for balconies only on the 1st and 4th floors.
