La enana Chepa con su cántaro
(La naine Chepa et sa cruche)
1923
An artist who was born deaf and dumb, José Antonio Terry developed a talent for drawing and painting very early on. With support from his father, an influential politician, he studied at the Santiago national fine arts school in Chile, then spent a period in Europe from 1904 to 1911. On his return, two archaeologists, who had been struck by the realism of his drawings, invited him on a trip to the Jujuy mountains at Tilcara to paint indigenous scenes from life. The Dwarf Chepa and her Pitcher (the frame of which is made from cactus wood) was painted in Tilcara.
