"Art is neither a reflection nor a transposition of reality; it is a response to reaIity" (Kantor)
Before becoming an internationally recognised figure in contemporary theatre Tadeusz Kantor, who trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, had an important career as a matterist and informel painter. This painting seems to refer to an imaginary cartography, with its heavy impastos and its powerful chromatic contrasts. It was made in Hamburg and exhibited at
the Legendre gallery in Paris, and is a far cry from the retrograde aesthetic of Socialist Realism that reigned in Poland at the time.
