Reversible and Changeable Phases of Movement
1972
The work of Dóra Maurer, a Hungarian artist involved with progressive circles, is emblematic of Central European conceptual art and of the Hungarian neo-avant-garde of the 1960s and ’70s in particular. Based on mathematical principles, her photographic series engage the body and subjectivity of the viewer. Reversible and Changeable Phases of Movement consists of eight studies, each composed of several photographs mounted on a sheet of card bearing an inscription in white chalk. The work interrogates our understandings of gesture and movement by permutating elements in a sequential logic of cause and effect.
