(Fin des vérifications. Pour Marcel Duchamp)
1971
The Italian photographer Ugo Mulas is chiefly known for his many portraits of artists and a series of conceptual photographs entitled “Verifications.” Produced between 1970 and 1973, this was, as the artist explained, a series of images “whose subject matter was photography itself, a sort of analysis of the operations of photography aimed at identifying its basic elements and their intrinsic significance.” It thus examines in turn the exposure of the film, the relation of aperture and speed, the practice of the self-portrait, enlargement, and so on. In the European photography of the early 1970s, the “Verifications” stand out as no doubt the first example of experimental and conceptual reflection on the medium itself.
