Geographical Analogies
2006 - 2010
To build this work, Cyprien Gaillard travelled around the world for four years looking for contemporary ruins.
These 900 Polaroid pictures were taken at a rich variety of sites, from Easter Island ta La Courneuve, from Rome to the Bronx, from Angkor Vat to Bagdad. The places he photographed all have in common the tact that they are threatened by destruction. The artist formed lozenges with groups of nine pictures set in display cases. Their incongruous association follows a principle of visual analogy. The hierarchy between popular culture and fine art, the ancient and the modern, the beautiful and the unattractiveis erased to give way to a universal dialogue of cultures.
