Torse de femme

"Nowadays the rebirth of a form can restore to the acme the fate of an original pure thought arriving on a tired earth." (Mastroianni)
Born into a family of artists, Umberto Mastroianni trained as a sculptor in Rome, then in Turin, where he settled. Following an initial period characterised by archaism, he developed a persona! style during the war while engaged in the resistance movement. Nurtured by Futurist and Cubist examples, his Torse de femme (Woman's torso) presents a distillation of energy and vitality. The powerful angular forms of the large nude are articulated in accordance with a jerky rhythm, the unpolished bronze reinforcing the rough and elementary aspect of the sculpture.
