The Assistant
2008
The Assistant comes from a series of seven installations and canvases in which text seems to have been effaced. Here, the enigmatic inscription “The A” stakes a claim on our attention, like a slogan on an advertising poster. To assuage his doubts regarding the quest for a redemptive response to universal iniquity, Josef Strau has changed roles, abandoning the status of artist to become his own assistant, relying on his own resources to continue the quest. In this series, ink marks or scraps of paper replace words, as if he were engaged in the endless preparation of canvases on which he no longer knows how to write.
