Brazilian photographer Rosângela Rennó bases her work on the appropriation of images, and she has a particular interest in photographs lost from major institutions. In this series, the artist shows the backs of photographs stolen from public archives in Brazil, photographed by the artist and accompanied by texts. The way the images show through offers Rennó a way of figuring loss and amnesia, echoing the disappearance of these photographs from the collective memory. The artist thus illuminates the link between institutional power and the photographic print on which it relies for the construction of official history.
