En suivant la main droite - de Marilyn Monroe dans "Some Like it Hot"
2006
Pierre Bismuth’s multifaceted works question our modes of perception and our cultural codes. This particular work is part of a series evoking the history of cinema, transposed by the artist through complex procedures. In 1999, the first pieces of this series entitled En suivant la main droite de… [Following X’s right hand…] were made in marker pen on panes of glass that he placed against the screen of a television showing a chosen film; on each pane, he traced the trajectory of an actress’s hand, following its movement. The image created by this process portrays a memory of the gestures brought to the screen by icons such as Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. For Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot (1959), Bismuth adapted his system to the wallpaper technique, giving the impression that this drawing – which provides a poetic reconciliation of the still image and the moving image – is close to the big screen.
