Maskedans i Brunt
(Danse des masques, marron)
[1943]
This macabre or carnivalesque dance reveals the Danish artist's fundamental interest in the motif of the mask.
This painting was made before the creation of the Cobra group in Paris in 1948, of which Egill Jacobsen was a founding member. The falsely naive mode of representation is influenced by Paul Klee and borders on abstraction. The work is composed of shapes and lines in a palette of brown and orange tones and bears a resemblance to children's drawings and outsider art. Dance of the Masks, Brown heralds the Cobra movement' s commitment to ancestral cultures in opposition to all bourgeois academicism.
