Sonne und Mond von einem Negativ
(Le soleil et la lune à partir d'un seul négatif)
1972
With this series, Rautert questions the specificities of the photographic medium.
Timm Rautert was part of the conceptual photography movement of the 1970s, which questioned the reception of image, the notions of authorship, originality, materiality and the photographic process. These pairs of photographs challenge, each in their own way, photography' s claim to represent reality in its totality. Sonne und Mond von einem Negativ, for example, presents a simulacrum: using a single negative exposed for varying lengths of time under the enlarger, the artist has produced two different prints, one of which seems to represent the sun and the other the moon.
