An Opera
[vers 1963]
Emmett Williams, a poet and performer at the epicentre of the Fluxus movement, was the author of a famous anthology of concrete poetry co-published by Hansjürg Mayer and the Something Else Press.
From 1958 to 1963, the artist made several rolls of notations that were both rhythmic scores, protocols for performances and typographical constellations. Presented in the Keller Club in Darmstadt in 1960, Yes It Was Still There: An Opera is an exercise in poetry punctuation and writing captured in flux. ln 1962 Emmett Williams made another milestone-piece, Four-Directional Song of Doubt for Five Voices, played at the International Fluxus Festival in Wiesbaden.
