Ma Desheng was immobilised for a lengthy period by a serious car accident in 1992, generating an evolution in his practice.
While poetry is a major thread in his work, new techniques developed out of a long convalescence: acrylic on canvas from 2002 onward, and lost wax sculpture as of 2008. ln Sans Titre (Untitled, 2007), the stones are piled up in accordance with a strangely anthropomorphic vertical alignment. A summary architecture opens on a bright background crossed by slim clouds. Against the nuances of grey in the blacks, ranging from cold to hot, the contrasting black and white of the stones seems to oscillate between two places
