Independence Day Celebrations, Boulevard de l'Indépendance

Born in South Africa, a former reporter and a long-standing member of the anti-apartheid collective Afrapix (a group of politically committed photographers), Guy Tillim uses photography as a means of combating inequality. His Libreville series reveals his interest in the urban space, and is conceived to reveal Gabon’s colonial past, and to mark the country’s new political orientations. The eponymous title of the capital makes humorous play on the relationship between democracy and autocracy, demonstrating the critical power of these photographs by Tilling: an expert in the documentary aesthetic.
