Väggmadame (la dame des murs)
2011
The highly personal world of Swedish artist Jockum Nordström – a world at once light-hearted and impish, debauched and occasionally scabrous – has its roots in many sources of inspiration: Swedish popular art, highly refined art from the time of Gustave III and the Enlightenment, the Pop Art of David Hockney, and others. His idiosyncratic figurative style, marked by a certain deliberate clumsiness, can adapt itself to highly varied supports, formats and techniques. Among the works gathered in this showcase, the large collage Väggmadame [Wall Lady], the Swedish title of which means ‘bedbug’, is divided in two: in the upper part there are characters from different eras, an erotic scene, and botanical elements, while in the lower part there are buildings and ruins.
