In the early 1910s, Ernest James Bellocq took pictures of New Orléans’ social outcasts, notably of the prostitutes of the legal red-light district of Storyville. In the complicity between models and photographer evident in the very natural poses, the typically provincial interiors and the absence of any client, these photographs avoid the sordid connotations one might expect, while the echoes of odalisques refer them to the high art tradition. Bellocq never showed these images during his lifetime; discovered only after his death, they were immediately hailed as great photographic achievements when exhibited in the 1970s.
