Alex Israel is known for a protean body of work exploring the culture of his home-town, Los Angeles. Artist, journalist on Purple Magazine and founder of a sunglasses company, he explains his fascination for this leitmotiv in his work: “For me, sunglasses are THE symbol of Southern California; they’re something that changes the way we see things, which is an interesting way of looking at art.” In his sculpture series Lens, Israel offers variations on this motif, in doing so claiming for his own the aesthetic of Californian Minimalism.
