Alix Cléo Roubaud is a Franco-Canadian photographer and writer. She is known for her Journal, published after her death by her husband, the poet Jacques Roubaud. She was also the central character in the 1980 Jean Eustache movie Les Photos d’Alix. Between the end of the 1970s and the start of the 1980s, she developed a highly personal photographic style influenced by medieval Japanese poetry, Rakki tai, which centres on the art of tricking death. She suffered from respiratory problems and recorded her very weak breathing by placing her camera on her chest at night. The fantastic and supernatural world of some of her series recalls the photographic stagings of Duane Michals. She also photographed her friends Jean Eustache and Jacques Roubaud, transfiguring them later in her photo studio.
