Since the end of the 1990s almost all of Andreas Hofer’s paintings and drawings bear the signature of the artist’s alter ego: “Andy Hope, 1930”, Andy for Warhol and Hope as in the English word “to hope”, a term in contrast with the dark period suggested by the year 1930. The artist draws inspiration from the decade of transition between democracy and totalitarianism between the Weimar Republic and the rise of national socialism. The artist deliberately attempts to cause chronological and formal confusion by mixing references. The Lowlands, 1996-2003, is an integral series of thirty drawings arranged in three rows. The artist plays with patterns associated with mass culture, religious iconography and the history of humanity. The result is strangely aesthetic.
