Le gilet de Maïakovski
1939
By combining a declaration of love and political manifesto, Styrsky produced an astonishing and profoundly persona! work.
ln the 1930s Jindrich Styrsky, a member of the Czech Surrealist group, engaged in painting that was dominated by the themes of dreams and eroticism. The practice of collage led him to make associations of objects that, when taken out of their usual context, generate mystery. The lightness of the scene is veiled here by the revolutionary red waistcoat of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, who took his own life in 1930. Painted as a trompe-l'oeil, a handwritten note evokes the painter Toyen, also a member of the Czech Surrealist group, whose life he shared after 1922.
