Mur i Wieza (Wall and Tower)
2009
Born in Israel in 1970, Yaël Bartana observes and poetically deconstructs the nationalist discourse and propaganda of the Middle East. She scrupulously examines the country of her birth from a critical point of view informed by her own attachment to the land. Mur i Wieza (Wall and Tower, 2009) recalls “Operation Wall and Tower,” which saw the construction of some 57 Jewish settlements in Palestine between 1936 and 1939. In it the artist invites us to imagine a return of the Jews to Poland, where only eight to twelve thousand live today. The construction of a pseudo-kibbutz for the filming in central Warsaw is itself interrogative in effect, blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality, hope and fear, past and present.
