To deal with conditions in this vast Brazilian metropolis, the architects reworked a traditional feature of the local architecture, setting a sunscreen in front of the concrete and glass façade, protecting the building not only from strong sunlight but also from the noise of heavy traffic. A broad concrete-framed opening in the block links the tropical garden behind, the interior of the building, and the urban exterior. The rear façade is of translucent panels, and the three floors are tied together by a forceful concrete staircase. The undulating façade was modelled in 3D but realised using craft techniques, expressing a commitment to both tradition and innovation.
