Tanbak explores processes of exclusion, whether brought about by military force or economic pressure. This untitled work from the series “In Transit” is a sculpture-cum-painting created by arranging white-painted cardboard “boxes” on the back of a canvas. It suggests an aerial photograph of a transit or detention camp, such as the Palestinian refugee camps set up in the Middle East since 1948, while also perhaps alluding to the artist’s childhood in one of Beirut’s Armenian ghettos
