A founding member of the Situationist International, Pinot Gallizio upheld the concept of the "professional amateur".
Pinot Gallizio, a pharmacist by profession, began his artistic practice in 1952. ln 1958, he invented the concept of "industrial painting", celebrated by Michèle Bernstein: "the industrialisation of painting, in contrast to the profitable buffooneries that have been constantly recurring for the past twenty years, is a technical advance that should be made without further delay". However, his industrial paintings were a commercial success and Pinot Gallizio was excluded tram the SI in 1960. ln 1962, he began his cycle of Notti di cristallo which included the work presented here, painted blind by the artist in two days.
