Heliographische Komposition
(Composition héliographique)
1939
An artist trained in chemistry, Karol Hiller set the cult of the material and the exploration of new techniques at the heart of his practice. In 1928, he developed the technique of heliography, using tempera to create abstract compositions on celluloid film that was sometimes scratched and scraped beforehand, which he then printed on photosensitive paper. These constellations of very precise geometrical forms, some soft, some hard, take on a cosmic aspect – for Hiller, a metaphor of the human spirit. In accord with Productivist thinking, the repeatability of the process supported wide distribution of the work.
