Le Pêcheur
1948 / 2001
ln this "definitive" edition of les Métiers (Trades), Alechinsky illustrates a text by his friend, ethnologist and documentary film maker Luc de Heusch.
The fantastic personages in this series are made up from elements associated with the respective trades they embody. Drum, tree, tubes, sewing machine, etc., form the base of this imaginary social typology. The influence of Surrealism is undeniable, particularly that of Max Ernst, whom Pierre Alechinsky had admired at the Galerie René Drouin in 1948. The original 1948 prints were presented at tthe Cobra "manifesto" exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1949.
