La prière
1907
"When I made this praying woman, I really wanted her to be 'the Prayer', and I realised I had to abandon live models because, faced with them we are in a position of sensuality."
ln 1907, Constantin Brancusi set about making a funerary monument in memory of the lawyer Petre Stanescu. The tomb consisted of a portrait of the deceased and a woman praying. An initial project for the woman was finally abandoned in favour of making a nude with blurred and simplified sensual forms. At this point the artist abandoned the portrayal of the model, thus foregoing all pathos.
