A shopping centre on three levels constructed around a central void left open to the air, the Forum des Halles was to be renovated at the same time as the esplanade to the west, and it was toward this that Patrick Berger and Jacques Anziutti oriented the vast airy roof of their design. Resting on structures housing the on-street shops on one side and the new arts and culture facilities on the other, this roof of gigantic, vein-like beams of metal and glass not only offers protection from sun and weather and assures natural light but also collects rainwater for the greenery.
