Plaster Surrogates
(Substituts en plâtre)
1985
Allan McCollum produces pieces in great quantity – all of them, however, unique – exploring the role and meaning of objects in conditions of mass production. In Plaster Surrogates he has marshalled together what looks like 20 monochrome paintings of different sizes, mounted and framed, in a dense hang typical of 19th century exhibitions. Yet these are not paintings but plaster models coated in the middle with black enamel paint. The painting has been replaced by a substitute, and the paint is no more than a trace. With this work, McCollum seeks to unsettle viewers’ expectations, interrogating the “experience of art”.
