Thonik, the graphic design studio founded in Amsterdam in 1993 by Thomas Widdershoven and Nikki Gonnissen, fosters the use of language and typography rather than iconography. The graphic artists’ work is focused on what they call «happy modernism» – a modernism free from rigour and discipline. They use so called «popular» cultural elements such as outsized lettering and saturated colours, and like turning values of scale on their heads, in a way that sometimes reflects the supergraphics of the Seventies. While they have designed a great deal for museums in the Netherlands, publication and the press, the couple endeavour above all to think up new methods for outsmarting the usual communication and sale systems.
