Having lived in Bangui in the Central African Republic since 1972, the Cameroon-born photographer Samuel Fosso has recently taken refuge in Paris. He turned to self-portraiture early on, using spare film from client commissions to picture himself in irreverently unconventional roles and attitudes. As he says, “I am both character and director. I don’t put myself in the photographs: my work is based on specific situations and people I am familiar with, things I desire, rework in my imagination and afterward, I interpret.”
