Whether painting, drawing, film or installation, all the work of Lebanese artist Mireille Kassar is informed by her love of experiment. In her “Landscapes” she domesticates the reactions of the natural pigments that she drops directly into water before soaking her paper in it. In this way, the material – in its fragility, its physical instability – becomes the subject of the work. If Lebanese artist Walid Raad saw in these landscapes “the history of an emergence”, it is perhaps a matter of the anachronistic appearance of the past in the present.
