Sixth Sense
(Sixième Sens)
1999
A central figure of neo-geo, the postmodern movement of abstract painting that emerged in the 1980s, Halley creates colourful geometrical compositions from forms he calls prisons, cells and conduits.
His geometric patterns take their origin in the figurative, as they are derived, for example, tram company flow charts,in reference ta the structuring of capitalist society. The title Sixth Sense refers ta M. Night Shyamalan 1s eponymous film released the same year, anchoring the work in the entertainment industry. But the real significance of Peter Halley1s painting lies beyond this, in the history of abstraction, with the questioning of modernist ideals.
